A Practical Guide to Productivity
Do More Better
by
Tim Challies
If you ever wished you had more time in a day to accomplish all that you have to do, this book is for you. As a busy church leader, family man, and author, Tim Challies shares from experience what he’s learned about productivity and how to make the most of each day. In this quick read, Challies lays the foundation of what it means to be productive and guides us through practical steps to living a fully productive life.
Obstacles
There are three main obstacles that get in the way of our productivity:
Laziness – How many wasteful things could we eliminate or spend less time on?
Busyness – How can we fulfill what God created us to do if our life is in chaos?
Thorns and thistles – How do we deal with the difficulties that crop up in our day-to-day lives?
Purpose
We have to understand what it means to be productive because it’s not just about checking things off a to-do list. While lists can help with productivity, completing tasks is not the ultimate goal. According to Challies, “Productivity is effectively stewarding your gifts, talents, time, energy, and enthusiasm for the good of others and the glory of God.” So, the ultimate goal is to bring glory to God by doing good for others. How much and how well we do this is the measure of our productivity.
Practice
Even though marking tasks off the list is not what defines our productivity, it is a helpful tool. There are practical things that must be done in order to fulfill our main purpose. In the second half of the book, Challies equips us with the tools, information, and organization we need to be productive and consistent. And you won’t want to miss the bonuses in the back of the book.
