We have a special guest on the podcast today, and you won’t want to miss her story. When Jodie Barrett wrote Jingle and Joy, a devotional and prayer journal for Advent, she never could have imagined how much she would need to hear her own message this season. It’s a message we all need to hear about resting in the joy of Christ during the busyness of Christmas. In the world, Christmas is about decorations and parties and presents and food. Even though we may enjoy these things, they can suck the joy out of us. Jesus said, “I came to give you abundant life,” but sometimes we miss His abundance because we’re so wrapped up in other things.

Prepare your heart

The season of Advent in the weeks leading up to Christmas is a time of expectant hope and longing for the coming of Christ. As the world hustles and bustles through the season, you can slow down and rest in it, at least for a few minutes each day. Jingle and Joy: Praying Beneath the Tree will guide you through 25 days of devotion and prayer directing your focus toward Christ and preparing your heart for the season. As you spend intentional time each day praying for others, feeding on God’s Word, and savoring the gift of Christ, may you be filled with His joy.

For many, the holidays can be difficult and painful as pangs of grief, loneliness and suffering overshadow the real meaning of Christmas. In the podcast, Jodie shares her family’s story of tragedy and how the joy of the Lord is holding them together as they enter into this Advent season. But how can there be joy in such pain? Jodie says it’s the Word of God that has penetrated her heart and filled her with peace and joy. And people see it. They see her joy in sorrow. They see something different in her, and the difference is Jesus.
