Praying the Names of God

by Ann Spangler

Praying the Names of God explores the primary names and titles of God in the Old Testament to reveal the deeper meanings behind them. El Shaddai, Elohim, Adonai, Abba, El Elyon?God Almighty, Mighty Creator, Lord, Father, God Most High?these are just a few of the names and titles of God that yield rich insights into his nature and character.”

In this devotional, you learn about the name, pray the name and then learn the promises in the name. Focusing on the names of God is a great way to start the new year.

El Roi

God sees us and sees our pain. He also sees the whole story from the beginning to eternity. He knows the end so we can trust Him.

Abba

Father. Like crawling up in a daddy”s lap or clinging to the leg of a parent.

El Shaddai

God revealed Himself to Abraham and Sarah when He established His everlasting covenant. He is a covenant keeping God. Faithful when we are faithless.

Psalm 18:2, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” NIV

You don’t know God as a rock until you need a rock. He is immovable and steadfast when nothing else holds.

Elohim

God the creator. He makes all things.

Isaiah 40:28-29, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? Yahweh is the everlasting God, the Creator of he whole earth. He never grows faint or weary; there is not limit to His understanding. He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless.” HCSB

Teach your children who God is so they will know where to go in times of trouble.

Get to know God through His names

When you cannot think straight and your mind is going in a million different directions, recite the names or characteristics of God. The more time you spend with God the better you get to know Him and His characteristics which are revealed in His names.

Sometimes we have to trust God in the dark and seek hard after Him when He is hard to find. When things are hard, He is good.
