She didn’t bristle when the long needle injected the medicine under her skin, however she spent the entire remainder of the trip trying to escape. Whenever I take my dog to the vet, I attach her to her leash. That’s easy, and it’s all good. But cats?? What am I supposed to do to make sure she stays in my possession until the boy comes back to get her? Uncertain, I wrapped her in a bath towel and drove with her in my lap. I guess they don’t say scaredy cat for nothing. Ah, but how many of us have an incredible fear of the unknown?

Fear of the unknown

Protesting loudly at the desk, she meowed while I waited to check in. Without warning, she flinched and jumped to the floor. I scooped her up in the towel and tightened my grip.
She stretched her neck and relished the attention while we waited for the veterinarian, whose clothing bore almost as much animal hair as an entire pet. Purring throughout the exam, they instantly bonded. Overall, the visit was painless and perhaps enjoyable.

Except

Cats are skittish by nature and she took off every chance she got. One minute, she was secure in my arms, the next she bolted. That darn cat!

We’ve grown quite fond of each other since the boy went West. The needle didn’t hurt and the vet was kind, yet she’s still afraid of the unknown. She ran to nowhere in particular to escape nothing in particular.

Sadly, that sounds terribly familiar.

Fear of the unknown

As I was checking out, she made it all the way to the exit door two more times before she finally tucked her head under the crook of my arm where she kept it all the way home.

Relax

I guess she figured she was safe with me and she relaxed. I don’t know what big, scary injections of stress you face today, but there’s a place you can lay your head where it’s safe.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” Psalm 4:8 NLT

Besides, where will you run?

“Simon Peter replied, Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.” John 6:68 NIV

What do you fear?

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1 ESV

Who keeps you safe?

“Keep me safe, O God, I’ve run for dear life to you. I say to God, ‘Be my Lord!’ Without you, nothing makes sense.'” Psalm 16:1-2 MSG

Don’t dart around in fear of the unknown, run to the Father and relax. Rest secure in the crook of his arm.
