I learned the hard way when I skidded into the boat dock and the whole thing lurched.  Fortunately, neither the jet-ski nor the dock were harmed.  Apparently, you cannot steer in the water without giving it gas.  I guess I probably should have known that before I tried to pull into the slip.

Proverbs 1:4-5, “for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-let the wise listen and add to their learning and let the discerning get guidance.” NIV

INERTIA

Life is the same way.  Without forward motion, we cannot steer.  Usually referred to as “being in a rut” or in this case “dead in the water” we can get stuck in our family relationships, friendships, careers or spiritual walk. Relationships constantly change and must be nurtured to grow healthier. But we have to give it some gas and move forward or we will not be able to control the direction we are going.

Philippians 3:13-14, “Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” NASB

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Relationships typically go through ups and downs. Sometimes we get stuck in the downs.  We cannot steer out of the rut because we are not going anywhere. Oftentimes the same hot topic generates the same negative response over and over. If this sounds familiar, recognize the trigger, prepare a different reaction and give it some gas.

Proverbs 15:1, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” NIV

CAREERS

Work should be satisfying.  But the work of our hands will only be fulfilling if we have a higher purpose in mind. Whether you are an accountant, trash collector or teacher use your relationships to encourage others. You never know when you are the one who will truly make a difference in someone’s life.

SPIRITUAL WALK

My son is preparing for summer classes in Spain. Hopefully his language skills are adequate. It would have been much easier if he had learned Spanish as a little kid or if we spoke it in our home.  Instead, he had to put forth much effort to learn enough Spanish to manage a conversation.

Learning God’s word takes time and effort too.  Teach it to your children early so it will be easier for them. Through diligent Bible study you will be able to learn to speak His language, but you will have to give it some gas. After being immersed in Spanish culture, I expect my son will be speaking fluently when he returns home. Immerse yourself in God’s word and He will speak to you.

I Timothy 4:15-16, “Cultivate these things.  Immerse yourself in them.  The people will all see you mature right before their eyes!  Keep a firm grasp on both your character and your teaching.  Don’t be diverted.  Just keep at it.  Both you and those who hear you will experience salvation.”  MSG

TRUE STORY OF THREE NUNS

After spending the day on the lake riding a jet-ski we pulled up to the retaining wall to unload a passenger.  Three nuns were strolling near the water in the July heat wearing blue habits and white baseball socks.  By the way, I did not make this up. The two older sisters were outgoing, but the younger was shy.  All three were genuinely interested in the whole business, so I invited them out for a spin.  The two older sisters encouraged the younger to go and she seemed to consider the adventure, but thought better of it when I affirmed she might get a little wet.  I guess she was afraid old habits dry hard.  Sorry that was cheesy, but it is true.

Proverbs 17:22, “Being cheerful keeps you healthy.  It is slow death to be gloomy all the time.”  GNB

Are you stuck?  Dead in the water and not going anywhere?  Give it some gas.  You may ram the dock or you may get wet, but it’s better than not having any direction.
