Flipping squirrels. That’s what it took to get my inspiration back. Well, you know there’s probably more to the story. Since you asked… How do you hang on and find solid ground?

If you know me at all, you know there’s no place I’d rather be than outside. Add a porch and three friends who love to laugh and it’s a perfect formula for happiness and inspiration. Especially since those three friends are creative conduits of words and encouragement.

Rocking back and forth in wicker seats, sitting next to pumpkins and mums parked on the steps, we shared goals and chattered advice. Lingering azaleas poked through new fallen leaves from the dogwood tree overhead, it’s bright red berries showing off against the hombre-colored leaves as they began their color change.

When some people speak, you want to take notes. My pen fought to keep up with the treasures of wisdom flowing.

Interrupted

Interrupted by rustling, no actually it was more like crashing. No one knew what was going on, but there was quite a commotion. It seemed like the tree was falling.

Enter the upside down squirrel stage left. The branch bowed near the ground while he hung on with all his might. In a split second I wondered if he would fall on our heads or if the branch would snap in two.

The intruder flipped upside down and clung to the limb until it rebounded and catapulted the furry creature to a higher branch. Finally, he found solid “ground” on a sturdy tree with branches large enough to support his slight weight, as well as his antics. Now that I think about it, maybe it was a girl squirrel; there was definitely a lot of drama.

Upside down

Life has a way of slinging us around. If an unwanted interruption is crashing your party and threatening to wreck your life, hang on. Hang on to your faith in an unshakable God. Hold tight to His promises. He is our deliverer and the God of rescue. But that doesn’t mean you won’t dangle in the branches for a while.

How do you hang on and find solid ground?

Here are some anchors of truth to keep you on solid ground:

“And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.”

2 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT)

“Stretch out your hand from on high; rescue me and deliver me from the many waters, from the hand of foreigners.”

Psalm 144:7 (ESV)

“…hold fast that which is good.”

1 Thessalonians 5:21b (KJV)

“Then they believed his words were true and broke out in songs of praise.”

Psalm 106:12 (MSG)
