LOSING THE GAME OF BLAME

It all started with a throne and a game of blame. No, not that kind of throne, the porcelain kind. This is not my story to tell, but it’s true (mostly) and too rich not to share. Names have been changed to protect the innocent guilty. Anyway, it’s certainly not my fault.

Once upon a time there was a toilet which needed to be replaced. The mini-makeover in the bathroom also included replacement of the tile. The tile was laid, the throne was set and all was well in the kingdom. Well, all except the faint smell the queen occasionally ignored. The gurgling sound was harder to ignore, but when the upstairs toilet roiled and burped during the night, it disturbed sleep and raised curiosity but not alarm.

What was happening downstairs was more sinister. By morning the tub had filled with eau de sewage and flowed like an infinity edge pool. Of course instead of chlorinated water it was, um, well, never mind. Anyway, there was a muddy, odiferous river running down the hall.

All hands on deck

Troops arrived soon: the plumber, the water company and Roto-Rooter. Completing the spectator gallery were mom, dad, their three sons and a teenage friend who was an overnight guest at Amityville.

As she stood in her palace, the queen began to overflow a little sewage as well. She was certain the tile man had clogged the pipes with his grout. Her anger stunk up the room when she blamed the plumber for incorrectly positioning the throne. Not only that, her irresponsible husband admitted he had flushed a tissue. Personally, I didn’t even know this was a sin but supposedly tissue doesn’t dissolve like toilet paper so clearly it was his fault.

They all gathered round as the colonoscopy was performed. Twisting and turning through the bowels of the house the flexible light searched for the blockage. The queen tapped her foot and waited with great anticipation to pinpoint the blame. Finally the entwined roots came into view blocking further passage into the dark tunnel.

Truth becomes evident when light shines on it

Ephesians 5:13, “Everything exposed by the light is made clear.” HCSB

Only it wasn’t a root. When illuminated it became obvious to all that it was, how should I say this? It was not grout, it was not an error and it wasn’t tissue. It wasn’t the tile man’s fault and it wasn’t the plumber’s either. In fact it could not possibly have been the fault of ANY of the men or boys in the house who stood speechless as the queen’s eyes widened before she threw her head back and covered her eyes.

It was feminine fault at its finest

All could she could do was admit it.

In the beginning…

Isn’t that how all stories begin? The man blames the woman (and God for giving her to him) and the woman blames the serpent.

Genesis 3: 12-13, “The man said, ‘The woman you put here with me – she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” NIV

Don’t let your anger reek until you’ve taken a good long look in the mirror. When crap is flowing through your own life call for help. Own it. Confess it and be clean.

1 John 1:8-9, “If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins – make a clean breast of them – he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. “ MSG

And that, my friends, is how you clean out the sewer.

The end….
