Wishing for more hours in the day, we collapsed into bed with only half the items on our to-do lists crossed off. Over and over we complained there wasn’t enough spare time to get everything done. Suddenly, we got the rest we didn’t want.
Seems we got what we asked for, and now we’re mad about it.
“God has told his people, ‘Here is a place of rest, let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.’ “But they would not listen.” Isaiah 28:12 (NLT)
They didn’t listen; they didn’t want it, and really, we don’t either. But what if God is trying to teach us something really important during this intermission, and we aren’t listening? I
The Lord is in the waiting
Chronically suffering from physical and mental exhaustion, we long to feel rested, yet can’t stop endless activities for half a minute. We need a break from our worn-out lives, then we feel guilty taking it. Maybe, just maybe, the forced slower pace is the place to find peace.
How long will we wait to go to Him?
“So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help.” Isaiah 30:18 (NLT)
Invitation
God invites us into His presence, but He also waits for us to invite Him into ours.
David shares his template for inviting God into the noisy places in Psalm 139:2. Will you join me in praying this and meditating on it for the next few days?
- Search me, O God and know my heart
- Test me
- Know my anxious thoughts
- Point out anything in me that offends you
- Lead me along the path of everlasting life
Everlasting life
He wanted everlasting life. Not tired, worn-out life, not anxious, never-ending worried life, but everlasting life. Rest that lasts. The kind found in the quiet stillness we keep fighting.
