The truth really does set you free

Make sure you know the truth, then make sure you believe it. Once you believe it, say it. Say it long enough until you’ll feel it, but you’ll never feel it first. Well, maybe you will, but emotions aren’t reliable and they never last. Plus, feelings can lead you astray. See, I’ve been walking this road long enough to know, it starts in your mind and spreads to your heart. Believe the truth, because the truth really does set you free.

“I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.” Psalm 199:15 NLT

Practice makes perfect

The women sitting in the sanctuary looked like shadows because of my constricted pupils. Bright lights pointed toward the stage where I stood and encouraged women to stand on solid ground. They had no idea how much my world had been rocked four days earlier. I got news that could potentially change everything, but it didn’t change my message or my faith. Want to know why? Because I know what I believe and all week I rehearsed it.

Over and over

Afterwards someone asked how long ago I started memorizing scripture. I’d guess around twenty years ago. But knowing it in my head isn’t enough. I need to know it in my heart, no, I need it in my bones and my blood, because when the whole world shakes, I gotta have something to hang on to. And I hang on to the truth of God’s word.

“When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3 HCSB

Memorization made easy

Memorizing is simple really. I saw you roll your eyes, but seriously. Now I didn’t say it was easy, it takes work, but anybody can do it. Awana cubbies can say verses when they are three years old and yet you say can’t memorize? I say you can, it just takes work. And trust me, it’s worth the work, because some day the earth is going to tremble under your feet.

“My soul melts from heaviness; strengthen me according to your word.” Psalm 199:28 NKJV

If Dory can…

Even Pixar characters with short-term memory loss can do it; Dory memorized P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way.

P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way…

That’s how we all memorize, rehearse it, over and over and over and over and over until it sticks in your brain and sinks into your heart. Say it out loud and repeat it until you believe it, because one day your world may get rocked and the truth really does set you free.

The truth really does set you free

The truth can’t set you free unless you know it. How much truth do you know? The Psalms are full of expressions of David’s love for God’s word and His truths and He was a man after God’s own heart. That’s the kind of woman I want to be.

“Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them.” Psalm 119:140 NIV
