When life turned upside down, scripture was my lifeline. There wasn’t time to grab a Bible and look up verses after the rug jerked out from under me, instead, I relied on what was already seared in my mind. That’s the reason I am so passionate about knowing Bible verses. Your whole world may change in an instant too, that’s why you need to memorize scripture.

Hang on tight to God’s word, tomorrow it may be your anchor.

Packing for a trip

Seven years ago, I packed for one journey, but went on an entirely different one. The cycling jersey and polarized sunglasses were useless during the five days I lay engulfed in an extra-large hospital gown.

Preparing for a 5 day bicycle ride, I packed five index cards with scriptures written on them. Let’s just say I’ve perfected the typical doctor’s handwriting, so I rewrote those verses on five fresh index cards, as if I were back in the third grade and receiving a letter grade for my effort. The improvement likely was from F to C, but at least the letters were legible now.

Weakness

Lying under the adjustable bedside table on wheels, I lacked the strength to lift my arms and hold the cards weighing a quarter of an ounce. But because I wrote them and carried them with me, I memorized the truth contained in each one.

When I was too weak to hold God’s word in my hands, I held it in my head and my heart.

Why you need to memorize scripture

I don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow, and neither do you. But I know this, God’s word is truth and I cannot neglect it. It is life and it is a lifeline when everything spins out of control. You need to memorize scripture because you may find yourself in a situation where you need it to breathe.

It’s too hard

Memorizing scripture takes effort, but it’s worth the time you invest. Maybe you think you are too old or not smart enough, but don’t believe it. Anybody can memorize scripture and you won’t regret it.
